Bright Young Things

After creating the packaging for their popular Lemon Soul beer last summer, I was blown away to be invited by Closet Brewing to come up with the design for another seasonal beer. This time they’ve producing a watermelon margarita-inspired gose, that has been brewed in collaboration with Hand Brew Co in Brighton.

Lizzie and Lucy had a clear vision of the colours and the artistic style that they wanted this beer to reflect. And after comparing inspirational images, at the project briefing, it was obvious that we were all on the same page.

A palette of pinks, maroons and greens, were sampled from photographs of watermelons. These were then applied to an art deco influenced pattern that I’d created and wrapped around the can. I chose Pontiac – a sturdy typeface with a 1930s feel – as the display font, and added inlines and subtle drop shadows to lift the text away from the textured background.

The inspiration for the name of the beer came from the group of 1930s socialites who liked to party and who were named, by the media of the time, as “Bright Young Things”. Plus I liked the fact that Bright was in the word Brighton. It’s a subtle nod to the partnership between the two brewers in the creation of this gluten-free beer.

I have yet to try this new beer. However I know that Closet Brewing are doing a tap takeover at the Salt Horse Beer Shop & Bar this coming Saturday, as part of Edinburgh Pride. So I'll definitely be wandering along there after I've joined everyone else marching up the Royal Mile.
